In a story I read recently, I boy was shouted at: “You just do not want to learn! When will you ever understand that one can learn everything!” and I asked myself: Is it true that you can learn everything? Can a fish learn to climb a tree?
It made me think of self-assessments in which you are asked to identify your own major strengths and weaknesses. Often, you are then encouraged to try to remedy your weaknesses. Some people do. The German chancellor Angelika Merkel chose to study chemistry after high school, because that had been her worst subject. And she succeeded. But that would not be the case for everyone. To excel in a field in which you are notoriously bad takes a tremendous effort, discipline and time, – and a fish will never learn to climb a tree like a monkey. But a fish can perfect the skills of swimming. So why not concentrate on the specific talents and reach excellence, instead of correcting weaknesses and at best achieving mediocre results?
