
Tongeren is Belgium’s oldest town. It has a rather new Gallo-Roman museum, which received the European Museum of the Year Award in 2011, and rightly so.
When you enter it, the first thing you see is this statement – “In the series of things those which follow are always aptly fitted to those which have gone before” – in big Greek letters. The English translation is perhaps not the best possible, and the shorter Dutch one “Wat volgt, staat altijd in verband met wat eraan voorafging” may be more adequate.
A first blog has little to build on. But this is a suitable text for lifelong learning. Everything we learn, builds on what we have learned before. This frames how we understand things later. And what happens later, depends on how we have prepared it today. This burdens us every day with considerable responsibility.
